Anita Fernander, PhD
Chief Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer
Professor of Integrated Medical Science

Dr. Fernander began her appointment as the inaugural Chief Officer for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University on June 7, 2021. As a Senior Associate Dean, and the inaugural Chief Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer she reports directly to the Dean of the Schmidt College of Medicine and serves on the College’s Executive Leadership Team. She is the College of Medicine’s senior leader responsible for fostering a diverse and inclusive culture and advancing inclusive excellence. She is charged with providing visionary and strategic leadership to ensure that justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are collaboratively infused throughout all aspects of the College’s missions, including education, research, clinical care, and community engagement. Her responsibilities also include overseeing the successful implementation and continual assessment of the College’s Diversity Action Plan, “The Race to Equity”.

Alicia Rootes, MBA
Interim Director for Diversity and Inclusion

Ms. Rootes has served the JEDI Office for five years, engaging with all College of Medicine stakeholders – faculty, students, staff, residents, community leaders, and funders – to achieve the goals of the college. Ms. Rootes’ role as part of the JEDI team is to oversee activities related to the College's Pathway Programs and Community Engagement. Specifically, Ms. Rootes is engaged in building the College's Kindergarten thru Residency/Fellowship medical and biomedical science pathway programs, supporting academic serving learning and interprofessional education, growing community engagement, guiding students involved in healthcare equity research, and supporting initiatives to recruit, nurture, and retain a diverse and inclusive College of Medicine community.

Ms. Rootes earned her M.B.A. from Southern New Hampshire University and holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and an Executive Certificate in Project Management from FAU College of Business.
